Bali 2020 Award winning garden designed & built by Graduate Gardeners

BALI Award 2020: Domestic Garden Construction £60k - £100k
Private Residence Ewan, Gloucestershire

The property had a recent, modern looking extension built, which sat adjacent to the existing rear terrace and swimming pool area.

The brief was to create a design that linked the new extension with the garden, creating the all important flow from the house to the garden, as well as working with the close proximity of the swimming pool. The pool sits at an awkward angle to the house, fortunately the new extension was set in the same orientation which enabled the garden design to connect more easily.

A new retaining wall was built further out than the existing, maximising the space, a Parex render finish created a more modern feel, contrasting with the surrounding Cotswold stone walls. A new section of Cotswold stone walling was used to replace a section of fencing in the lower area.

With the new glazing to the house and the constraints of the pool, incorporating planting into the scheme to soften the area was key. Therefore as part of the planting scheme a central border was used to bring a third dimension into the space, this also helped separate the seating area from the main body of the paving.

The aim of the planting was to soften the area, creating interest but at the same time allowing the eye to flow into the landscape beyond.

Garden lighting was used throughout the scheme, with step and wall lighting as well as highlighting key features within the scheme.

Millboard decking was used on the seating area to define and breakup the expanse of paving, the colour of board (Burnt Cedar) was used to compliment the colour within the new extension.

Overall the scheme has proved to be a great success, the clients have been delighted with the design and workmanship.
