BALI AWARD 2020: DOMESTIC GARDEN CONSTRUCTION £60K – £100K

The property had recently been redeveloped and had been landscaped as part of the project. Having lived with the space, the clients were looking to carry out some changes to the scheme.

The main priority was to remove the large Leylandii hedge that ran along the boundary, dominating the area, casting shade, and also taking up space. The paving that was laid as part of the building works was poorly laid, puddling in several areas. The client wanted to rework the redundant side path area, so this could now become a planted space. The existing flight of steps leading from the side access to the main paved area were therefore no longer required and the glass balustrade was taken down and remodelled to fit the new layout.

With the Leylandii being removed, privacy was still very important, as the kitchen/living area would be very overlooked from neighbouring properties. So a large slatted Cedar fence was incorporated, to provide the necessary screening. The staggered, double sided slat design detail within the fence, still allowed some light through into the garden, making the fence a little ‘lighter’ in its appearance.

Being south facing, with the hedge gone, the main terrace area needed some shade, therefore, a well-engineered, cantilevered pergola was designed, the idea being for it to blend seamlessly with the cedar fence. The steelwork had a  powder coated finish in the same colour as that used on the house, this helped link and anchor the main focal point of the design.

Millboard decking was used to define and link the seating area with house, a small paved area was also included to site the BBQ.

The trampoline which originally sat on the paving, now has a new home, set up above the paved area, adjacent to the lawn.

Overall the scheme enhances the property, providing a beautiful, family friendly outdoor space.
