Grads Green up City Space and Win 2 BALI Principal Awards

The British Association of Landscape Industries’ prestigious landscaping Awards are the largest in Europe, providing a spectacular end of year ceremony showcasing the finest examples of landscaping excellence in the UK and overseas.

The 46th National Landscape Awards ceremony were once again held at the iconic JW Marriott Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London on Friday 2 December 2022.

This year Graduate Gardeners entered 2 gardens by designer Mark Draper and won the Principla Award for both:

Courtyard Garden – Cheltenham
Designer: Mark Draper

The client who recently moved into the flat above his business, wanted to create a green space, encouraging wildlife into what was a bleak, non-inviting area. The existing site was laid to concrete, its primary use was to park cars at the back of the property.

The garden has become a small urban oasis for private use, in the centre of Cheltenham, creating not only an inviting, wildlife friendly space that the client was looking for, but also a better working environment.

The client is really pleased with the finished results, the design has met the brief, the planting has already settled in after a relatively short period of time and once the Hawthorns mature, it will really emphasize the woodland feel.

Swimming pool conversion to a terrace – Painswick
Designer: Mark Draper

The brief from the client was to make more use of the space to the rear of the property. The area was dominated by a rather tired and unused swimming pool, with a host of odd levels which provided little usable space.

The scheme has only just been completed, so the planting is young, but given time, the planting scheme with bring softness and structure to the area.

The original design did have more detailing within it (garden room, free standing walls and a water feature), but these had to be omitted in order to meet the client’s budget. The landscaping that has been implemented though still creates a fabulous space, a major improvement for the property as a whole. The client is more than happy with the finished results, the design has met the brief, time will now really bring the garden to life.
